"Do hard things in beautiful places with good people."

Meet the Coaches

Scott Jones and Cale Pearson literally ran into each other at a trail running camp in the high Rocky Mountains a few years ago. They found that they share the same passion for helping people do big things and truly believe that the body fuels the mind. After spending time in Costa Rica together for another trail running retreat, the adventure leadership retreat idea was born. We would bring Cale’s leadership expertise along with Scott’s entrepreneurial experience and life long coaching career working with high level athletes together.

  • Cale loves being a part of and leading teams. In college it started with a degree in Business and Sports Management. In his career he has led teams in many different arenas. One common theme that leads to strong teams is great communication. He strives to create an environment where communication is proactive and flows to create great results.

  • Scott started Athlete on Fire as a brand that is all about bridging the gap between athletes doing amazing things and the rest of us. Using the discipline and lifestyle of a lifelong athlete to apply to entrepreneurial endeavors, travel, raising young kids, and more!  Athlete On Fire was created as a tip of the cap to the original and most influential athlete in Scott's life, his dad.

The mission is to create business and experiences to keep people moving and training for life.  Scott is currently running the Becoming Ultra Project to help new runners run their first ultra with some of the best coaches in the industry.  He is launching Life In Audio to capture meaningful audio for the masses and has been putting on training camps and retreats for athletes of all kinds for over 15 years.  When he isn't dabbling online, he still trains athletes in person and brings people together from all over the country to run in beautiful places.

The Itinerary

Where we will be and what we will be doing!

Oct 22nd, Day 1: Arrive and drive to Turrialba Casa Turire Hotel

After flying into San José, you’ll be met at the airport by your guide and your coaches. You’ll be starting the drive to the home of Turrialba Volcano. We are going to spend the night at the beautiful Casa Turire Hotel . You need to arrive(ideally) on a flight between 11 AM to 1 PM. Once we settle in we will move around to shake out the travel and do an introduction meal to set up the week of adventure and learning!

The COMFORT Crisis: Could our sheltered, temperature-controlled, overfed, underchallenged lives be the leading cause of many of our urgent physical and mental health issues?

Oct 23rd, Day 2: Trail Running/Hike/Walk & Rafting Pacuare River (Pacuare Outdoor Center)*

As you arrive to Costa Rica and get acclimated, we will focus on RESILIENCE: Think of all the disruption we have experienced over the last few years: a pandemic, labor shortages, political unrest, supply chain strain, inflation, remote work environments along with a looming recession. When facing change and instability, are you as mentally agile or resilient as you could be?

Our goals will be:

  • Convert from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset.

  • Practice mental agility to transform failure into success.

  • Demonstrate resilience tactics to navigate any challenge or obstacle.

Today, we are going to start with some trail adventures (walk, hike, or run. See faq page for more info) through a rural community on the way to Pacuare, then we will raft into our Pacuare Outdoor Center which was built using all local labor and materials from the land. National Geographic sites the Pacuare as one of the five most scenic rivers on the planet. *POC Lodge amenities, include showers, bathrooms, fully enclosed bungalows, and great views of the river and surrounding jungle. The real adventure begins today. Plan on getting out of your comfort zone more than once.

Oct 24th, Day 3: Zipline, Tarzan Swing & Waterfall Nature Hike (Pacuare Outdoor Center Camp)

COURAGE: Todays physical activities will take some courage even for the seasoned thrill seeker. Courage in leading shows up in many different forms. As leaders we are often the person that people seek to get answers from.

  • Describe a time when you showed courage in leadership and another time when you wished you would have been more courageous.

  • Leaning on day 1 The Comfort Crisis and Day 2 Resilience where is an area of your leadership you would like to be more courageous?

You will be experiencing our infamous Tarzan Swing and Zipline course! The swing will have you swinging hundreds of feet over the river while staying attached in a harness of course. We have a lower platform for those interested in a less adventurous swing. We'll also be riding the zipline, so we are going to experience the Pacuare River from other level.

Next, we are going to hike to a beautiful waterfall where we are going to have the chance to slide in and have some fun! This is about a one-hour hike and will have its vertical challenges hiking down into the canyon. Every evening will be a break out session taking what we learned and applying to the leadership curriculum

Oct 25th, Day 4: Whitewater Rafting thru Pacuare Canyon and Travel to Turrialba (Guayabo Lodge)

TEAMWORK and ENDURANCE

Research shows that executives who maintain strong relationships are up to 30 percent more productive than people who don’t. In a world that increasingly glorifies individual achievement, the reality is that nothing succeeds like working together.

• Learn how to create passionate, engaged teams.

• Delegate responsibilities the right way.

• Get to know team members as people first.

• Become an effective role model.

Today we will be rafting the world famous Pacuare Canyon after a morning workout and hike/run. We save the best for last and the scenery here is like no place else in Costa Rica. The canyon walls rise 300ft up in straight rock and 200ft waterfalls fall into the river as we float down completely virgin tropical rainforest from start to finish. Then we are going to start our drive back to Turrialba.

Oct 26th, Day 5: Trail Running to Aquiares, Coffee Tour (Guayabo Lodge)

Our last full day together we will bring it all home. With lessons from The Comfort Crisis, building resilience, analyzing your leadership courage and teamwork. We will discuss your biggest takeaways from your Adventure Leadership Retreat experience and how to draw on this experience for years to come!

It’s time for some exploring in the highlands closer to the volcano! We have the chance to go to a local Coffee plantation where we are going to learn and experience coffee procedures. In the evening we are going to have our farewell dinner as a group!

Oct 27th, Day 6--- Fly Home!

Its time to start the fly back home with a luggage full of Pura Vida and we are going to miss you! (Meals: Breakfast) (airfare is not included with this deal).

Leadership Itinerary

What we will be learning!

Day 1:

THE COMFORT CRISIS

After getting settled we will gather for the first time as a group. We will step right into THE COMFORT CRISIS. Could our sheltered, temperature-controlled, overfed, underchallenged lives be the leading cause of many of our urgent physical and mental health issues?

Come to your Adventure Leadership Retreat having read or listened to THE COMFORT CRISIS. We will send you a credit on audible for you to download the book. Upon arriving we will also present you with a hardback copy to refer to during our trip.

Rule 1 Learn to lean into the hard

Rule 2 Push past your current comfort zone

Day 2:

Resilience

Think of all the disruption we have experienced over the last few years: a pandemic, labor shortages, political unrest, supply chain strain, inflation, remote work environments along with a looming recession. When facing change and instability, are you as mentally agile or resilient as you could be?

Our goals will be:

• Convert from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset.

• Practice mental agility to transform failure into success.

• Demonstrate resilience tactics to navigate any challenge or obstacle.

By practicing resilience this will help you in all facets of your life. Have you ever met that person who seems to have it all together? Resilience is key! They have the same daily challenges and same 24hours we all have. They are experts at managing their time and prioritizing those non-negotiables that lead to success!

Day 3:

Courage

Definition of COURAGE: Mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty.

Courage is shown in many different ways. Todays physical activities will rely on our courage to withstand danger, fear, or difficulty. Often in leadership we think of courage only when it comes to danger. Courage in leadership is showing patience, holding your team accountable or making bold decisions that defy the safe choice.

We believe that the mind/body connection is powerful. By focusing on and practicing courage in the physical form as well as in our leadership roles we will build experiences to draw from in the future.

Day 4:

Teamwork and endurance

If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.

Henry Ford

• Get to know team members as people first.

• Become an effective role model.

Day 5:

Bringing it together

Our last full day together we will bring it all home!

You will leave Costa Rica with amazing memories!

You will create new relationships with like-minded people and have a special bond with these new best friends. We will wrap up the highlights of our time together and create an action plan for you to take what you learned and apply it to your daily life back home.

Once you get back home its easy to slip back into a familiar routine. We will schedule a follow up coaching call 30 days after to help you stay focused on the action plan you developed while in Costa Rica.
